Scenario Planning is a tool for strategic thinking. The purpose of scenario planning is to enable ourselves to make better strategic decisions today, after engaging in a structured process of examining a range of hypothetical but plausible futures. UCSF’s executive leadership engaged in a multi-step scenario planning process in 2022 as a way of building broader awareness of driving forces influencing our operating environment, discussing implications of different possible futures based on how those forces might play out over time, and exploring options for actions that could serve us well across a range of possible futures.
