UCSF has over 1,200 ultra-low temperature freezers. Many of these freezers are older, non-Energy Star cerified freezers that draw double the electricity of an Energy Star freezer. These older freezers are at a much higher risk of failure which puts valuable, or irreplacable, research samples at risk of being destroyed or compromised. The pilot project's goal is to replace over forty of the highest energy consuming ULT freezers in one building at UCSF.
